The Fire & Rescue Service Monument
In 2005, HM Chief Inspector of Fire Services invited The Trust to accept responsibility for ‘The Fire Service Garden’, at The National Memorial Arboretum. On 28 May 2008, Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal unveiled the new Fire and Rescue Service Monument, located within the renamed ‘Firefighters Memorial Garden’, dedicated to all those who serving, or who have served within the Fire and Rescue Services of the UK.
The Trust normally organises a Service of Thanksgiving at the Arboretum, but this will not take place in 2016.
The black marble lectern at the entrance to the Firefighters Memorial Garden, records the unveiling of the Monument by our Patron Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and gives information about the Trust.
The obverse of the Monument has two inscriptions.
The first is the motto of the ‘Worshipful Company of Firefighters’ (Link?) with whom the Trust has had a close association from the inception of The Trust:
"FLAMMAS OPPUGNANTES FIDIMUS DEO"
This Latin inscription translates as, “Fighting Fire Our Trust in God”.
A second inscription serves to epitomise the role of the Fire & Rescue Service and simply reads:
“Firefighters Serving Humanity”
